syslog and readonly fs

I am having trouble with syslog, it is configured: *.info @syslog.server. The filesystem is mounted readonly during boot and after the boot syslog does not send a thing, however, if I mount / -o remount,rw,noatime and restart syslog it works fine. Where's the catch?

I believe the problem is that syslog gets it's message through file system sockets (/dev/log, etc). If those are not writable, syslog has no way of getting the messages.
